The Raspberry Pattern represents the term "raspberry", that is used in its irreverent sense, as in "blowing a raspberry." which derives by the act of producing a noise similar to that created by flatulence by the mouth as it forms the protracted expulsion of air through the lips to reproduce the sound similar to that of gas as it is passed through the rectum. Flatulence is produced as a mixture of gases that are byproducts of the digestion process of mammals and other animals, that takes the form of flatulence. The mixture of gases is known as flatus in medical speak, informally as a fart, or simply (in American English) gas, and is expelled from the rectum in a process colloquially referred to as "passing gas", "breaking wind" or "farting". Flatus is brought to the rectum by the same peristaltic process which causes feces to descend from the large intestine. The Raspberry Pattern is the formation of the mouth as the noise is emitted.
